Instructions

  1. Cook the penne pasta according to package directions. While the pasta cooks, proceed with the sauce. Bake the frozen garlic bread according to package directions, typically at the same time as the sauce is simmering.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage (casings removed) and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the sliced red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and yellow onion to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, dried basil, dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. Drain the cooked penne pasta and add it directly to the sauce in the skillet. Toss to combine, ensuring the pasta is well-coated.
  7. Serve the sausage and pepper pasta hot with the garlic bread. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the spice level of the Italian sausage to your preference. If you prefer a richer sauce, a splash of heavy cream can be added at the end.
