Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean)
- 0.5 yellow onion (diced)
- 2 clove garlic (minced)
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 0.5 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground)
- 8 hamburger buns
- 1 package coleslaw mix
- 0.5 cup pickles (sliced)
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and diced yellow onion. Cook, breaking apart the beef, until browned and onion is softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add tomato sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, light brown sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
- While sloppy joe mixture simmers, toast hamburger buns lightly if desired.
- Serve the saucy beef mixture on toasted hamburger buns, accompanied by a generous side of coleslaw mix. Offer pickles and extra mustard as optional toppings.
Notes
You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and simply reheat when ready to serve. It's even better the next day as the flavors deepen.
