  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil for the pasta.
  2. In a large skillet, crumble the mild Italian sausage and cook over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat and remove sausage from the skillet, setting aside.
  3. Add the olive oil to the same skillet. Add the sliced yellow bell pepper, red bell pepper, and yellow onion. Sauté until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the vegetables and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Return the cooked sausage to the skillet.
  6. While the sauce simmers, cook the whole wheat spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  7. Add the drained pasta directly to the skillet with the sausage and sauce. Toss everything together until the pasta is well coated. Serve hot.

Notes

If you enjoy a touch of sweetness, a pinch of sugar can be added to the tomato sauce. Leftovers reheat well.
