Ingredients
- 2.5 pound ground beef (80/20 lean)
- 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 yellow onion (medium, chopped)
- 4 tablespoon taco seasoning mix (low sodium)
- 8 ounce tomato sauce
- 0.75 cup water
- 20 taco shells
- 10 ounce shredded iceberg lettuce
- 4 Roma tomatoes (chopped)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 0.75 cup salsa
Instructions
- Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the 2 1/2 pounds ground beef and 1 medium yellow onion. Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the 4 tablespoons taco seasoning mix, 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce, and 3/4 cup water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
- While the beef simmers, warm the 20 hard taco shells or soft flour tortillas according to package directions.
- Set out the beef mixture, taco shells/tortillas, 1 (10 ounce) bag shredded iceberg lettuce, 4 Roma tomatoes, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup sour cream (optional), and 3/4 cup salsa (optional) for a build-your-own taco bar. Enjoy!
Notes
Toppings can be customized to your family's preferences. Leftover seasoned ground beef reheats well and can be used in quesadillas or on nachos.
