Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Stir in chopped yellow onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onion softens and garlic is fragrant.
  3. Add dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir for 1 minute.
  4. Pour in crushed tomatoes and water (or beef broth). Bring to a simmer.
  5. Add the broken spaghetti to the skillet, stirring to submerge it in the sauce. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is al dente and most liquid is absorbed. If needed, add a splash more water during cooking.
  6. While pasta simmers, prepare the garlic bread according to package instructions. Toss mixed green salad with Italian dressing.
  7. Remove skillet from heat. Stir in grated Parmesan cheese. Serve hot with garlic bread and green salad.

Notes

For best results, use quick-cooking spaghetti if available, or break regular spaghetti into smaller pieces. Leftovers reheat well.
